A Moveable Read: Hemingway in the 21st Century

This six-part discussion series is based on the book, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories”, by Ernest Hemingway featuring guest speakers discussing specific short stories and interrelated topics of today. A craft talk will take place at the end of each discussion.

Part One: A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

Hemingway’s A Clean, Well-Lighted Place is among the most masterful short stories ever composed, and among Hemingway’s most beloved works. Curiously, the story’s central themes are suicide and male loneliness. This conversation will consider the story’s fusion of empathy for the forgotten, and the stark, terse aesthetic Hemingway chose as a means to consider male social isolation. We will consider the current epidemic of male suicide through the lens of Hemingway’s tale of a depressed Spanish waiter.
