Part Three: Fathers & Sons
How do we learn about social categories such as masculinity? Who teaches us about those things? On the surface, Hemingway’s “Fathers and Sons” is a series of short reflections on hunting, sex, and the landscape--thoughts a father passes on while driving his young son in the country. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that we are not reading about only one father and son but, as the title suggests, all fathers and sons. We learn about how fathers ARE sons, and that those fathers are conscious of their own sons' potential as future fathers. Criticism of one generation becomes anxiety for the next, as the terms “fathers" and “sons” blur into learned ideas of masculinity. This talk includes a craft talk and exercise.
