A Moveable Read: Hemingway in the 21st Century

This six-part discussion series is based on the book, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories”, by Ernest Hemingway featuring guest speakers discussing specific short stories and interrelated topics of today. A craft talk will take place at the end of each discussion.

Part Five: The Killers

"The Killers" is a story of boyhood innocence lost, understood, and then nostalgically remembered. It is also one of Hemingway's best known gangster stories, with its portrayal of Chicago gangsters, racism, and violence. How do the different genres intertwine in the story? How is it a Chicago gangster story? How is it not? Is it racist in its depictions or does it critique racism? What does it suggest about violence? We will start with these questions and follow the discussion wherever it leads.
